EduKick USA is proud to partner with Gateway Preparatory Sports Academy to bring you the unique EduKick USA – GPA Soccer & Education Academy. The academy will provide a complete package of academics, soccer specific training and cultural experience. We believe that living studying and training in the USA will provide an invaluable life experience that a soccer player will never forget and the benefits of such an experience will be embedded in you for the rest of your life.


Gateway Preparatory Academy is a private school with a main campus, sports facilities and dormitories. GPA’s mission statement is to spark imagination and dreams in the youth of today so that they will become the great leaders of tomorrow. The school has created an environment that challenges both the intellectual as well as the creative passions of each student. The sports Academy provides excellent facilities and an elite training program that allows each individual to develop and enhance their technical and tactical knowledge of the game in a challenging environment.


EduKick USA - GPA staff are keenly aware of the challenges that our Residential Academy presents to our participants and are fully committed to the overall education of each individual through our soccer development and education. Living, playing soccer and studying in USA as a teenager or young adult represents an enormous challenge for both the participant and the educators. From the participant's; courage, effort and character is required to succeed. From the EduKick USA- GPA staff, it demands creativity, professional guidance, supervision, mentorship and expertise in order to provide the required level of care and service to our young academy participants.

Education


EduKick USA – GPA Soccer Academy participants attend Gateway Preparatory Academy main campus from 9.30am – 1.30pm each weekday to focus on their academic pathway. Our priority is to ensure that each student-athlete progresses toward a meaningful college degree. It is our goal that they learn to balance the demands of being both a student and an athlete as they grow and develop. Student-athletes need to learn ways to budget time and energy as they combine practice and competition with academics. Because of their unique demands, some student-athletes need academic assistance. Tutorial study time is allocated each evening at the residence dormitory.

Advanced placement classes
 – provide students with additional academic challenges. These course allow students to explore subject matter at an accelerated level and prepares them to take the AP exam for college credit. Gateway Prep offers several Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

There are 3 types of career Concentration tracks offered. Students who choose one of these tracks will have the same core classes as those who choose the honors track but in addition will have concentrated training in theior chosen track.

The 3 career tracks offered are:

Athletic Enhancement Track (most popular option for EduKick Soccer participants) focuses on developing high performing student athletes by providing personal player development, Athletic marketing, Strength training, Career exploration, Leadership/character Education, Sports nutrition Education, Mental Conditioning and time management. The program also provides:

  • ACT test prep
  • NCAA Clearing house workshops
  • Rigorous college prep course

Bio-Medical Track is a cutting edge program that gives high school students the opportunity to begin studying for a career in Biomedical Sciences. The courses in this track cover the principles of biomedical science, medical interventions and bio-medical innovations. This track is made for any student interested to undertake a career in the medical field.

Business Track teaches students to tackle business challenges in the classroom, covering such courses as payroll, income tax, accounting, Business procedures, management and consumer law. The array of business classes offered prepares students for a variety of careers teaching them to effectively communicate business principles in the working world.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

ESL classes are provided daily to all international students who will critically read and analyze college level texts. Students in the EFL program will develop effective speaking skills such that they can be understood by classmates, faculty, staff and others for academic and social purposes including conversations, classroom discussions and oral presentations. Students will demonstrate basic competence in managing the writing process and will produce effective written products including college essays and similar types of academic writing. Students will be able to listen to and understand the main ideas and significant relevant details in various listening contexts.

USA Football Academies LocationEduKick USA – GPA Soccer Academy is located in Glen Carbon, Illinois. Glen Carbon is praised for its wide selection of housing, abundant vegetation and its strong community spirit. Based upon Money Magazine’s research Glen Carbon is rated as one of the best places to live in the USA! Glen Carbon was also placed highly (12th out of 50) on the safewise safest cities in Illinois. With a population of 13,000 people the close community spirit is obvious in Glen Carbon.



The program facilities utilised at Gateway Preparatory school main campus, Gateway Sports Academy, Edwardsville High School, Southern Illinois University and Accelerate fitness are all located within minutes of each other in the Glen Carbon surrounding area. Participants are transported by private bus between the program locations.

Glen Carbon is located just 20 miles north of downtown St Louis, Missouri which is home to United Soccer League franchise Saint Louis FC as well as other USA well know sports franchises St. Louis Cardinals (Baseball), St. Louis Blues (Hockey) and NFL’S St. Louis Rams. The St. Louis University Billikens men’s soccer team who participate in the Atlantic 10 conference.



St Louis is known as the Gateway to the west because it was the starting point for the westward movement of settlers in the United States during the 1800s. It was a traveling hub for many settlers, hunters and others migrating west and is marked by its most famous landmark the Gateway arch . St Louis is proud to be a melting pot, as people from all over the world have settled in the City and incorporated a myriad of cultural traditions into the diverse fabric of the region.
CAMPUS RESIDENCE

Students are accommodated in our supervised residence dormitory facility in Granite City, Illinois, a suburb of St. Louis, MO. Fifty students can be accommodated at our residence at any given time. The residence consists:

  • 6x oversize dormitory rooms (each room sleeps 8 students)
  • Full-size kitchen
  • 6x bathrooms
  • TV room
  • Lounge/games room


Students eat 3 meals every day, including the weekends. Each meal is prepared by our cook and served buffet style. The academic year football boarding school course has been carefully designed to ensure that you get the maximum benefit from this unique English language immersion soccer experience. However, please remember that you are going to be living as a guest in another country, with different customs, language and food, so it will be a challenge! You will meet all members of the course (your new teammates) and will be living alongside them for the duration of the academic year. The information below is designed to help you integrate as easily and quickly as possible. Keep in mind, you and your teammates (including the staff) will likely build a forever lasting lifelong friendship!

  • Take the time to write a personal bio and also a football resume to share with EDUKICK USA Gateway Soccer Academy staff prior to your arrival.
  • Make an effort to ask about your new teammates, their interests and hobbies.
  • Make sure to follow course rules and regulations at all times.
  • Remember at EDUKICK USA Gateway Soccer Academy we are a team be sure to be punctual to all activities and events.
  • Always use a pre-paid international telephone card (available from local stores) to phone home.
  • Always remember to ask EDUKICK USA Gateway Soccer Academy staff if you ever are confused about anything or have a question of any type.
  • Try and keep your room and bed as tidy as possible to respect your fellow roommates and to follow Gateway course rules.
  • Make sure to eat well at all three daily meals as your body will need to be well nourished and hydrated to handle the daily training sessions.
  • Set a regular schedule for doing your personal and sports laundry


Remember! You're not living in a hotel and your parents will not be there to help you!

Finally, you must remember that the American people may do things differently to what you are accustomed. It's also easier to misunderstand a situation when communicating in a foreign language. If you are unsure about something, ask a Gateway staff member to assist you.

Insurance:

Students are required to take out an individual insurance policy for the duration of their stay.

Security:

You are teammates and a family that should not steal from each other, but we do understand that theft does happen. You are responsible for your valuables and are responsible to place them in a secured place.  EDUKICK USA Gateway Soccer Academy cannot be held responsible for theft from room and do not tolerate theft.

Academy Rules:

Students must respect the internal rules & EDUKICK USA Gateway Soccer Academy rules. If they are not respected, the offending student can be dismissed without any refund.

Wi-Fi is free and available at our facility.  Students are welcome to bring their laptops or any device.

Safety & 24 hour care is our highest priority, in addition to the Host Families, EduKick USA has a full-time dedicated Student Health & Welfare Officer to mentor, guide & supervise participating EduKick USA players on a daily basis (as needed).

FOOTBALL COURSE

EduKick USA - Glen Carbon, Illinois Football Academy Development Course

The goal of EDUKICK USA Gateway Academy is to work with players on every aspect of their training to ensure they develop the physical, technical, tactical and mental foundation required for optimum performance during matches in front of college recruiters and coaches. This is accomplished through coaching and training in advanced strength and conditioning techniques, uniquely integrated with mental, nutritional and sports medical principles all enhanced by the environment and high tech facilities. The daily training sessions take place each afternoon at our training facility in Edwardsville, IL.

Exposure to college recruiters and coaches is provided on a constant basis throughout the duration of our EDUKICK USA Gateway Soccer Academy programs by playing competitive matches against college teams and other club soccer programs in the regional area.

We create a highlight film for each player to enhance their exposure to the college recruiters and coaches to increase their opportunity of receiving a football scholarship.

EDUKICK USA Gateway Soccer Academy training programs include:

Soccer Coaching (Tactical)

As part of the program students will be learning the tactical parts of the game, looking at shape, movement, set plays, defending and attacking as a team and phase of play.

Soccer Coaching (Technical)

Practice makes perfect with every individual player. Each day the students will be coached not only in the complexities of the game, but also the simple elements of the game to ensure individual improvement and performance.

Speed, Agiltiy, Quickness

Fitness Training/Speed, Agility, Quickness. Each week the students will be put through their paces in fitness sessions. These sessions will vary and include aspects such as endurance and technical movements associated with the game. All students are expected to use these sessions to improve fitness for the game and to provide ideas along with them being a learning tool for the personal fitness sessions.

The sessions will include footwork and developing quick feet without the ball, co-ordination and awareness, anaerobic speed burst movements of the game and general aerobic fitness. During these sessions students will be taught the safe practices of training to assist in injury prevention.

Strength and Conditioning

In soccer, lower body strength is required for striking the ball, jumping, tackling, twisting and turning and also forms the foundation for explosive speed. Upper body strength is required for shielding the ball, holding off opponents, throw-ins and also contributes to overall power and explosiveness. Twice per week participants visit Accelerate Fitness High performance centre to receive guided training sessions from Dr. Eric Dixon, DC, MS, NSCA-CPT and the centre staff. The group are guided through the 4 phases required for a successful season

  • Early Pre-Season - Build Maximal Strength
  • Late Pre-Season - Muscular Power and Strength Endurance
  • Late Pre-Season - Muscular Power and Strength Endurance
  • Off-Season - Build Functional Strength

DIRECTOR OF SOCCER OPERATIONS


Tim Byrnes

Byrnes spent his collegiate career playing in both the NAIA and NCAA. Byrnes finished his career at Greenville College in 2004. After completing his career he began coaching at Greenville, having the opportunity to coach under 2012 NAIA Coach of the year Brian McMahon.

Byrnes helped guide the Belhaven University Blazers of Jackson Mississippi to an NAIA National Championship in 2012, the second title in program history as the Associate Head Coach. In 2013, Byrnes also led the Blazers to the round of eight in the National Tournament along with being selected to lead the top NAIA players in a seven game tour against professional teams including USL Pro, NASL, and MLS organizations.

At the end of the 2013 season, Byrnes returned home to the St. Louis Metro area to continue his collegiate coaching career. Byrnes currently serves as the Assistant Coach at Maryville University and helped propel the team to their best conference performance in their Division 2 history. 

Along with his college roll, Byrnes is the Director of Coaching for JC United, an up and coming youth club in the St. Louis area. Byrnes coaches and directs eight teams within the club in conjunction with several of the top college coaches in the St.Louis area. Byrnes also serves as a coordinator for the College Id Program tying him directly to over 20 college coaches locally and coaches nationwide.

Byrnes was born and raised, played his club, high school, and collegiate soccer in the Metro St.Louis area. "The opportunity to bring the highest level of soccer to the St.Louis area and to manage players from around the world that will impact the club and collegiate levels nationwide is a dream come true" Byrnes says.
